Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) use permanent magnets in the rotor to create a magnetic field. They are the most common type of motor in modern electric vehicles due to their high efficiency and power density.
Advantages
- High efficiency (typically 95-97%)
- Compact size and lightweight
- Excellent torque at low speeds
- Lower heat generation
- Better range efficiency
Considerations
Permanent magnet motors require rare earth materials like neodymium, which can be expensive and have supply chain concerns. They also have limited field weakening capability at very high speeds.
Common Applications
Used in most Chinese EVs, Tesla Model 3/Y, and many other modern EVs. Particularly popular for rear-wheel drive configurations and efficiency-focused vehicles.
