BYD Seal: The Tesla Model 3 Challenger That Delivers
4.5

The BYD Seal has been one of the most anticipated electric vehicles to emerge from China, often dubbed a direct competitor to the Tesla Model 3. After spending three months and covering over 15,000 kilometers with the Seal, we can confidently say it lives up to much of the hype, and in some areas, even surpasses expectations.

From the moment you step inside, the Seal exudes a sense of quality and refinement. The interior materials are soft-touch and well-assembled, with a minimalist yet functional design. The large rotating infotainment screen is a centerpiece, offering crisp visuals and responsive touch controls.

Performance and Range: A Daily Driver's Dream

Our test model, the Seal Premium, features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup. Acceleration is brisk and linear, with the car effortlessly reaching highway speeds. The 0-100 km/h sprint is quoted at 3.8 seconds, and it feels every bit that fast. More importantly, the power delivery is smooth and predictable, making it a joy to drive in various conditions.

The BYD Seal offers a dynamic driving experience with impressive acceleration.

Range anxiety was virtually non-existent. With its 82.5 kWh Blade Battery, we consistently achieved over 500 km on a single charge in mixed city and highway driving. On longer trips, careful planning around charging stops was still necessary, but the car's efficiency was commendable.

Interior Comfort and Technology

The seats are supportive and comfortable, even on long journeys. Both front and rear passengers have ample legroom, though taller individuals might find rear headroom a bit snug due to the sloping roofline. The panoramic sunroof adds to the airy feel of the cabin.

  • 15.6-inch rotating infotainment screen with DiLink OS
  • Dynaudio premium sound system
  • Wireless phone charging pad
  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) including adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist

While the infotainment system is generally excellent, some menus and settings can be a bit buried, requiring a learning curve. However, over-the-air (OTA) updates promise continuous improvements.

Build Quality and Safety

BYD's commitment to quality is evident in the Seal's solid construction. Panel gaps are consistent, and the doors close with a reassuring thud. The Blade Battery, known for its safety and thermal stability, provides peace of mind. The Seal has also achieved a 5-star NCAP safety rating, reinforcing its credentials.

The BYD Seal is not just a car; it's a statement that Chinese EVs are ready to compete on a global stage, offering a compelling blend of innovation, quality, and value.

Verdict: A Formidable Contender

The BYD Seal is a truly impressive electric sedan that offers a compelling alternative to its Western counterparts. Its combination of strong performance, excellent range, premium interior, and advanced technology makes it a formidable contender in the global EV market. While minor software refinements could be made, the overall package is outstanding.

For anyone considering a premium electric sedan, the BYD Seal should be at the very top of their list. It's a clear indicator of the rapid advancements and growing maturity of Chinese electric vehicles.

The software UI is my only concern. Hopefully, OTA updates improve it soon.
