EV Maintenance Guide: What You Need to Know

EVs require significantly less maintenance than gas cars. Here's what you actually need to do to keep your EV running smoothly.

The Good News: Less Maintenance

One of the biggest advantages of EV ownership is dramatically reduced maintenance. No oil changes, no transmission fluid, no spark plugs, and no exhaust system repairs.

Regular Maintenance Items

Tires (Every 6-12 months)

EVs are heavier than gas cars and have instant torque, which can wear tires faster. Regular rotation and proper inflation are crucial.

  • Rotate every 10,000km
  • Check pressure monthly
  • Alignment check annually
  • Replace when tread depth reaches 3mm

Brakes (Every 2-3 years)

Thanks to regenerative braking, brake pads last much longer in EVs. However, they still need inspection.

Cabin Air Filter (Every 1-2 years)

Replace regularly for optimal air quality and HVAC efficiency.

Coolant (Every 4-5 years)

Battery and motor cooling systems need occasional coolant replacement.

Battery Care

  • Avoid frequent 0-100% charging cycles
  • Keep battery between 20-80% for daily use
  • Minimize exposure to extreme temperatures
  • Use scheduled charging during off-peak hours
  • Avoid frequent DC fast charging when possible

Cost Comparison

Maintenance ItemGas Car (Annual)EV (Annual)
Oil Changes$200-400$0
Transmission Service$150-300$0
Brake Service$300-500$100-200
Total Average$1,200-1,800$300-500
EV owners typically save 50-70% on maintenance costs compared to gas vehicles.
